5 TIPS ON HOW TO ACHIEVE A MODERN FARMHOUSE INTERIOR STYLE

If you are looking for a modern contemporary touch to your home then the modern Irish farmhouse interior design style might be for you. This style has fast become a trendy interior design style not only within Ireland but you can see little nods to this interior design all over world and it’s incredible popular on Instagram at the minute.

A lot of people are loving this style and want to make it a part of their interior but it’s difficult to know where to start? Well, let’s take a look at the elements that make up this interior design so you can spot this trend and find ways to apply it to your home.

WHERE DID MODERN FARMHOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN COME FROM?

The Modern Farmhouse style has similar origins too shabby chic. After the very modern glam and contemporary design style of the early 2000s. The rise of shabby chic, the Modern Farmhouse trend followed. This then welcomed the rustic chic trend. This style seemed to capture the hearts of homes nationwide as they returned back to their cosy roots and functional living.  This was definitely helped by advertising and the rise of the DIY television programmes like Grand Designs and 60 Minute Makeover shows in the late 1990s. In the early 2010s home makeovers would nearly always incorporate reclaimed wood, antique finds and farmhouse sinks in every home renovation.

The Modern Farmhouse interior is still at the top of the list when it comes to looks that are commonly recreated today. Particularly with the rise of Pinterest and Instagram and the new Netflix show “Dream Home Makeover” from McGee and Co. They have remade this style into the ultra-luxurious Modern Farmhouse trend that we’ve all come to love and want a little bit of in our homes but perhaps at a more budget friendly cost.

WHAT IS SHABBY CHIC?

Modern Farmhouse evolved from Shabby Chic but what was it? The term "Shabby Chic" originated in the 1980s. Opulence and decadence was taking over and an alternative look started to emerge. It was filled with history and vintage finds with feminine style. Boom, Shabby Chic was created!

WHAT MAKES MODERN FARMHOUSE STYLE SPECIAL?

It’s a great home style for people who want something traditional that also feels contemporary. Modern Farmhouse is aesthetically pleasing, simple, cosy while not being too busy because of this it can fit well into a wide range of homes and families.

WHAT IS A MODERN FARMHOUSE STYLE?

The Modern Farmhouse design is a blend of classic and vintage designs and can be achieved by adding neutral palettes and natural elements. It includes minimalism, mix and match and a natural colour pallet along with natural elements. Overall, it includes a vintage yet modern feel that improves the interior dynamics and design.

WHAT DOES MODERN FARMHOUSE STYLE MEAN?

If you are thinking cows and buckets and hay etc you’d be wrong. It doesn’t actually mean farm but it does take a few farm-like living nods from this way of life.

I actually love it for this reason as it gets to the heart of the house and back to what really matters in life. As I’ve said before interior design is supposed to help to add to your life and how you’d like to live in your home rather then feel like you are living in a museum. Let’s be honest that’s not fun for anyone living in the space.

It's about decorating and styling your home with a simple and practical mindset that often comes with living the country life. Instead of bright and flashy decor, you’re looking for soothing colour combinations, natural elements and texture. One of the great parts of the Farmhouse style is that it is open to interpretation and everyone can add to it what feels good. However, there are a few basic and general rules to help you on way to achieving this look.

5 ELEMENTS TO HELP YOU CREATE A MODERN FARMHOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN

1. COMFORT

It is always a great idea to keep things practical. You need to choose a design that allows a cosy feeling and comfort is of the utmost importance. Think lots of soft natural furnishings with interesting mood lighting anything brassy new-age chandeliers and metallics are great. These items help to create a cosy living setting and make your space more inviting.

2. COLOUR PALLET

Natural colours seem to deliver a sense of serenity and calm to a space and it’s perfect base for a Modern Farmhouse palette. Fresh and open, it has all the versatility needed for a little of the old and a little of the new. It can look very of-the-moment when used correctly.

Although you might think all whites are created equally this is not actually true. It’s one of the areas a lot of people over look. It’s important to find the right white for the space so take your time and try out a few white tones on your wall before you fully commit. A lovely contrast to try is a feature wall in a different tone white to the rest of the walls in the room. You might think it'll go unnoticed and would be a complete waste of time since as they are all white colours and who will notice? And, in a way, it does go unnoticed but the room feels completely different. It gives contrast and a shadow affect in an understated and subtle way.

Colours tones to opt for includes white, beige, silver creams and golden soft whites.

3. NATURAL ELEMENTS

Farmhouse and industrial styles share an emphasis on sturdiness and function. It’s easy to bring them together with natural materials. Rugs made of cowhide or jute are staples of both farmhouse and industrial styles for their raw minimalism. Natural elements help to add a classical farmhouse appearance to your interior.

You can use plants, stones, reclaimed wood, wool, linen and cotton to add a unique texture to the contemporary style.

4. FURNITURE

A fun way to get this look is by mixing modern pieces of furniture with rustic décor. Industrial stools and coffee tables are great to help achieve this look quickly. A pine or oak table with a flashy ultramodern piece might stick out normally but will look fantastic together in this interior design. Just be thoughtful about your selection of contemporary décor so it fits together in harmony.

5. YOU

With this style you can add a little bit of your own personality to it and you can also mix a little of another interior style that you love into this Modern Farmhouse design. So, you can lean in a little to the Scandi, clam, white, clean vibes or add cool Rustic, cowboy woody vibe or a super English traditional vibe, you can even go a little Asian and add some Japandi interior. It’s really up to you just remember to keep the other interior styles as an understated nod so that means just one or two extra items.

The best part is that you can always change the aesthetics and create a new style every time you want to be creative.
