HOW TO FIND YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN STYLE

HOW TO FIND YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN STYLE

Starting any project can feel a little overwhelming especially when you don't want to make any costly mistakes that will drive you nuts every time you walk into the room.

So, take the pressure off and go into the project knowing that you'll make the right decisions and choices by following a few simple rules and remember this is supposed to be fun not stressful so approach it in that way.

STEP 1: WHAT ARE THE COMMON THEMES THAT YOU ARE DRAWN TO?

The first thing anyone can do is to use what is freely to hand and easy to find like magazines, Instagram feeds and Pinterest boards.

After you’ve created these broads and collected some pictures, take a look and see what they all have in common?

Ask yourself about repeating themes in each of these areas:

  • Colours - open and airy vs. dark and moody
  • Hardware – brushed gold, black, silver or none at all etc
  • Material – fabric, leather, patterns, plain, linen, velvet etc.
  • Architecture – Victorian, Neo-classical, Renaissance, Modernist, Traditional, Contemporary etc.
  • Interior themes – Scandinavian, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, Grand Millennial, Minimalism, Boho, Maximalism, Californian Beach Casual, Rustic, Hollywood Regency etc.
  • Vibe – Formal versus relaxed, clean lines versus embellishment, zen versus vibrant.

When you've answered all of these questions and you have a clearer idea of what you do and do not like, it will make the process so much more easier to follow.

STEP 2: WHAT STYLES MIX?

As humans we get distracted all of time particularly with the new and shiny and that’s when a mismatch of ideas happen and your space looks either cluttered or slightly off in a way you can’t quite put your finger on.

The rule is you can always mix styles that are close together on the chronological timeline. For example you could combine Art Deco and Hollywood Regency because they are 1920s and 1930s. So, similar lines feel happy together.

Another great mix is Mid-century Modern and International Modern as they are 30s through to the 60’s. The same can be said for Industrial and the early 20th Century Modern because they are late 1890s to around 1915-ish.

Why is this rule important? Because the styles are so close conceptually on the design chronological timeline that they will always harmonise when styled together.

So can you mix Scandi and Industrial? No.

Can you mix Art Deco and Mid Century Modern? No.

Can you mix Industrial and Grand Millennial? Nope!

Can you mix Scandi and Minimalism? Yes, you can.

Great – you’re on the way to a happy stylise space that has continuity throughout.

STEP 3: CONSIDER YOUR LIFESTYLE

Finally, the most important part of your style is actually your lifestyle.

A lot of people miss this step and it’s actually the most important part of finding your interior design style.

For example, you might love the glamour of the Hollywood Regency style and go for pieces like mirrored side tables and a cream plush velvet sofa but if you have children who run around, play with crayons and jump across furniture on a day to day bases this will not only upset you when things get broken or damaged but it affects the mood within your home.

Interior design is supposed to help you not only love your space but to make your space work for you and your family to create a happy loving home.  This doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of glamour in your space, you can find something similar but a little more relaxed like traditional modern.

How you live in your home is the most important part of your style so children-friendly furniture like slipcovers and leather furniture which is easy to wash and wipe down are all factors to consider.

The Beckham Sofa Range is a great example.

Enjoy the process and have fun finding your interior design style.
